Gold leaf gilding is an old specialist craft which traditionally was used extensively in decorative calligraphy. Gilding is often associated with French baroque style, but gold leaf gilding has been applied to wood furniture since the time of the ancient Egyptians.
Our Gilding Restoration Process
There are numerous occasions when, on close inspection, items have in fact been adorned with a gold paint (often bronze powder), and have consequently begun to develop a green hue. In such instances we will strip the paint off, frequently only to find the original gold leaf guilding underneath. We would then reseal the gilded surface. We would re-gild missing areas with an appropriate matching gold leaf.
We always ascertain what the client requires before proceeding with any work.
